Treatment of Cultured Cells with PB125 Activated Nrf2, Induced Nrf2-Dependent Gene Expression, and Protected Against Oxidative Stress

AURORA, CO, USA, May 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Pathways Bioscience LLC, a biomedical sciences company focused on discovering and developing small molecule drugs and dietary supplements that act on gene transcription pathways, and the provider of the Nrf2 activating dietary supplement PB125® announces the recent peer-reviewed publication of its scientific paper entitled “Phytochemical Combination PB125 Activates the Nrf2 Pathway and Induces Cellular Protection against Oxidative Injury” in the journal Antioxidants.

PB125® was formulated by Pathways Bioscience as a dietary supplement to help promote healthy aging. In the published article it was shown that PB125 activates the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) transcription factor, which binds to the antioxidant response element (ARE) and regulates the expression of a wide variety of cytoprotective genes.

“We applied several modern genomics approaches, including genechip microarray, quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, and RNA-seq technologies, to examine the gene expression induced by PB125®. We found that PB125® regulated canonical Nrf2-regulated genes, noncanonical Nrf2-regulated genes, and a number of genes which appear to be regulated by non-Nrf2 mechanisms that are not shared with other Nrf2 activators,” said Dr. Joe McCord, the scientific leader and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience. Pathway analysis identified Nrf2 as the primary pathway for gene expression changes by PB125®, and the work also demonstrated that PB125® protected cultured cells against an oxidative stress challenge by a strong chemical. oxidant.

“For over a decade, scientists throughout the world have been studying the important role that the transcription factor Nrf2 plays in health, wellness, and aging,” said Dr. Brooks Hybertson, President/CEO and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience. “Since it is important to maintain Nrf2 activity and natural cell protection mechanisms as people age, we attempt to apply the most current scientific knowledge and state of the art scientific tools to our work. Publication of the scientific research findings on our Nrf2-activating dietary supplement formulations (PB123 and PB125) is a top priority at Pathways Bioscience, and this paper on gene expression and cell protection by PB125 helps demonstrate that,” continued Dr. Hybertson.

The Nrf2 transcription factor has been called the “master regulator” of cellular antioxidant, detoxification, and cell defense gene expression, and its function has been shown to diminish during aging. Therefore there is great interest in developing new ways to maintain healthy Nrf2 activity. The newly published work by the Pathways Bioscience group showing Nrf2 activation, upregulation of cytoprotective genes, and protection of cells against oxidative stress supports the use of PB125 as a dietary supplement to promote healthy aging.

About Pathways Bioscience
Pathways Bioscience LLC is a biomedical sciences company focused on discovering and developing new agents, both small molecule drugs and dietary supplements, that influence gene expression pathways and exert beneficial effects, with particular emphasis on the Nuclear Factor, Erythroid 2 Like 2 (NFE2L2, or Nrf2) gene transcription factor, known as the master regulator of cell protection mechanisms. These activities are based on the concept that the best way to improve healthspan and overcome the health and wellness problems associated with aging is to support the body’s own defense mechanisms that allow it to normalize, protect, and heal itself. The company's headquarters are in Aurora, Colorado. Pathways Bioscience has developed the PB123 and PB125 dietary supplement formulations using Nrf2.0® Technology. PB123 is currently available in Latin America through a partnership with Activz LLC in their GNM-X product, and PB125 is currently available in the US directly from Pathways Bioscience on the Company’s Website at www.pathwaysbio.com.
